We've decided the old full time gallery front just ain't for us anymore. There will be a few project based exhibitions in the coming months to look out for but for now, we're playing host to one final show in the current space.

It's with our tea drinking, profanity loving English illustrator pal 'French' next week. That's fitting really, he was one of the first to show with us above Mellino's in late 2008 and now he's helping us see out this space with a bang.

Its been a couple of weeks between drinks but next next Thursday the 24th sees the opening of All Things Lost , new works by two Sydney based artists Max Berry and Mark Alsweiler. After Mark's successful show with us last year and Max's feature in several group shows we've hosted, its a perfect time to showcase these new pieces before we see out the year.

Max depicts meditative landscapes and seemingly vulnerable figures, whose calm isolation prompts the viewer to consider the relationship between the actual and the spiritual, agency and fate and the narrative in which they may co-exist.

Mark reflects more of an affinity with the imagery of yesteryear, letting that form the basis of his work. His instantly recognizable acrylic paintings and wooden sculptures often involve themes revolving around a world of contrast.

Show opens Thursday November 24 at 6pm and continues until December 11.

Sharne Wolff arts writer and a contributor to The Art Life has bestowed upon us a fantastic piece of writing about our current show 'Three Winter Coats and a Dirty Knife' and the hard yakka behind each and every Nine Lives show.
Here is what she has to say...

With the ‘We Are Here’ international symposium on artist run initiatives running in Sydney during much of this week it seems appropriate to focus on a local ARI (or Artist Run Initiative) for this week’s review.

It is fairly well acknowledged in Australia – namely by the Arts Council who are the major financial supporter of ARI’s - that they play a critical role in the presentation and promotion of Australian contemporary art practice and culture. Nine Lives Gallery in Brisbane is an ARI that receives no public money. It’s run by a group of (you guessed it) nine keen art lovers who come from all walks of creative life. The nine lives – made up of photographers, designers, illustrators and filmmakers – began their Gallery three years ago above a grungy Italian restaurant in Brunswick Street - but opened more recently at a small space in one of Brisbane’s cultural hubs in Winn Street, Fortitude Valley. The space is tiny but oozes a young artistic vibe and loads of cultural energy.

Without funding, the Gallery manages to tread the difficult balance between financial viability and vulnerability on the one hand, and absolute creative flexibility on the other. One of the nine, the personable Matt Rabbidge, plays the everyday roles of permanent curator, organiser and general handy man. Rabbidge is aware that the Gallery plays several roles in Brisbane including a kind of ‘cultural service’. He says, ‘It’s great when 200 people turn up for an opening for the art and the free drinks - but at the end of the day we still have to sell some works to pay the rent’. The ultimate idea is to provide an alternative contemporary space as a platform for local artists to show their work and hopefully move on to national and international artistic forums.

‘Three Winter Coats and a Dirty Knife’ opened last week with its guest curator, Ellie Anderson – also one of the five exhibiting artists in her first show. She and four others: Jesse Olsen, Kylie Spear, Dord Burrough and Dan Ford exhibit illustrations which respond to a poem written by Anderson and inspired by the Neko Case song ‘Dirty Knife’:

'Cold winters stowed away,

Isolated deep in the woods.

Perspective lost, he’s far-gone now.

Creatures eddy as forlorn moonlight cuts through the window.

Haunts paralyze, as the blood runs crazy'.

The song depicts the tale of a man who, after living a solitary life deep in the woods, is driven to insanity within his own thoughts. If this story line sounds familiar, there are strong links between those lyrics and the Sean Penn film, ‘Into the Wild’ which runs a similar theme. Anderson says, ‘I didn't want to use the lyrics of the song in the concept outline so I wrote a short poem to spark a bit of mystery when promoting the exhibition. Basically the poem works as a narrative. The artworks illustrate the narrative behind the poem and the gallery space works as a reflection of the story’.

Each of the artists has responded to the theme with a set of ink drawings. The Gallery looks like an intimate wooden cabin - with sculptural pieces of driftwood, vintage lamps, an amazing set of carved buffalo horns and moody lighting to set the scene. It certainly doesn’t feel like Brisbane in here. Of course, that’s exactly what Anderson wants to achieve.

Most of the artists in this show are still studying or are very recent graduates. Dord Burroughs work has gothic folkloric overtones that are reminiscent of scary fairytales, but are occasionally humorous. With a Scandinavian background and currently working in Berlin as well as Brisbane, these different senses of home and histories of traditional folklore no doubt assisted in her inspiration for this show.

Daniel Ford, also sometime based in Berlin, has previously worked on album covers and in video. His small ink drawings in this show – mainly portraits – use the darkness and light of the medium well. His quirky vintage frames of different sizes are perfect for these drawings and add personality to the show. Jesse Olsen has a background as an illustrator and tattoo artist and has done some finely detailed drawings for the exhibition. My favourites were his sea craft – boats and ships evocative of the dual emotions of optimism and fear.

For her own part in the exhibition Ellie Anderson has contributed intricate ink drawings of forest animals – including a wolf, a bear and an owl. The medium of ink allows Anderson to make careful layers of primitive patterns to build her black and white pictures and bring the poetic theme to life. As an intern at Nine Lives, as well as a student at Queensland College of the Arts, Anderson’s debut as a curator is providing valuable on the job experience while she studies.

Working in ‘mark-making’ seems to be popular amongst current art school graduates. Kylie Spear’s practice encompasses several mediums, including video and sculpture, but for this show she has concentrated on laboured ink drawings in the mark-making style. The popularity of the style means that if you are going to do it – you have to be good. Spear’s drawings show a mix of excellent skill and control. Instinctual drawings effortlessly evolve into fluid landscapes with the addition of thousands of tiny gestural marks. The recurrent wolf appears again.

Several years of hard toil on behalf of the Nine Lives team means that they, along with these five and the dozens of artists they have helped support to date, can announce they too are ‘here’. Lets hope they get to stay.

Make a Noise, Make a Difference presents: Mada-Hu-Ha! a charity concert for South East Madagascar

Hundreds of Brisbanites are set to help make a difference in Madagascar next month, simply by seeing live, local music.

On the 16th of September four Brisbane bands will be hitting the stage of a donated charity warehouse in Fortitude Valley to raise funds for Azafady, a charity which connects volunteers with aid projects in Madagascar.

The night will kick off at 7pm with four-piece Shady Bliss, followed by Pink Services, Boss Moxi and Galaxy.

A group of Brisbane artists have also donated their work to be sold in an auction on the night. The event is 18+ and BYO, only an entry donation is required on the door.

All of the profit from this event will go to Azafady, and Made a Noise Make a Difference is hoping to raise awareness of the extreme poverty many Madagascans live in everyday.

The even will lay a foundation for Make a Noise, Make a Difference, a new organisation put together by a few passionate young Brisbane folk to raise awareness and money to help fight poverty and environmental issues overseas.

One of the organisers Zoe Buckley Lennox and friend Frances Boothroyd have decided to volunteer over in Madagascar for 10 weeks as a part of the Pioneer program run by Azafady.

They will be living and working alongside remote village communities helping them to build a better future for themselves.

While in Madagascar, Zoe and Frances may be involved in building wells to provide clean water, protecting villagers from the spread of cholera, building schools in rural communities, helping in community lead conservation initiatives, establishing community market gardens and beehives to improve nutrition and provide villagers with alternative incomes.

The show was brilliant and there is one particular work i had to share. At first glance of Saâdane Afif's 'The Skull' i was immediately engaged, but didn't quite understand the titles reference. After reading the didactic I observed the chrome balls closely.

He tells me he gets alot of work done. Sometimes I wonder. Nick Chalmers is a good friend of the gallery, more like a close cousin. When he does new work, we're happy. Yesterday he put this clip together for Rhythm with some recent footage he took of Harry Roach and Dane Peterson goofing round. Makes me sad that even when they goof round they surf far better than the average Joe ever will. Not sure if I've introduced myself, I'm average Joe.

Book for Breast Cancer - Call for Participants

More than 10,000 Australian women find the courage to fight breast cancer every year. The Book Project invites real woman to show their support by participating in a photographic program that showcases the very real beauty and courage of the Australian woman.

There are three things we know for sure. One – breast cancer can affect us all. Two – real beauty and courage is on the inside. Three – prevention is better than a cure. The Book Project aims to demonstrate these three points through documentary style photography.

Either staying anonymous or standing loud and proud, show your courage by having your image captured wearing nothing but a pair of black Bonds underwear. Real woman. Real beauty. Real courage.

The first one hundred images will be transformed into one off posters and 100 limited edition hard cover books. The sale of posters and books will go directly to the prevention and cure of breast cancer, while also educating woman on how to prevent breast cancer.

As I’m sure you all know SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS, the top music festival of the year, is kicking off next week! Not only does this event provide us with outstanding acts in an unburdened atmosphere, it provides us with a visual extravaganza showcased by local and international artists. My good friend Doc has just been over for a month in Bali shaping some boards at Deus Bali, he met some pretty interesting cats people on the way. Australian Artist Bob Moore is over there spreading his time between producing new works and glassing the odd board at Deus. He also met this guy, young photographer Tom Hawkin. He's the in house photographer and film maker over there. He's got a photo blog with some great shots, Doc says he's only 21. Surely things can only get better.

This Thursday the 14th is a big night for us, the opening of the 'MERZ' group show with some incredible Australian Artists, and then its Feed The Cat 2 upstairs at the Zoo.

The Merz concept show has toured Victorian and South Australia in recent months, featuring painter Jeff Raglus, ceramics artist Gerry Wedd, painter and illustrator Ben Waters and Chris De Rosa. We're happy to be playing host to it up here in Brisbane.

Our very good friend, Nine Lives guest curator Mariam Arcilla is a busy woman. She definately plays her hand in helping build the cultural identity of the Gold Coast while working for council. This weekends event is proof, building on the momentum from last year, Streetcube is back as part of the Surfers Paradise Festival featuring Beastman, Shida, Jae Copp and Gimiks Born who will collaborating on a wall project, live, on Saturday afternoon. There were a handful of workshops with the artists too, but news has it these have all filled up now. Head along, this is great for the Goldie.
